A Black Woman, who is free, in her speech, her thoughts and expression, free to love whom she pleases, free to create and flow with the tides of life on her terms, against her own soundtrack, free to forgive – ( for she has forgiven herself and her abusers), in harmony with nature, selective about her food and lovers and has given her children space to breathe and create without reproach but cultivates them in wisdom - for she has petitioned the Creator for an infinite supply of wisdom…free in her body and hair, growing upward and outward yet grounded and unmoved by the gravity of society which urge her to spend and trust the invalidating rags and trinkets…the sister who trusts not in reports of sickness and statistics…who slumbers breast to breast with her Creator, the free Black woman drenched in power, love and a sound, unbothered mind……THIS woman, is the face of God… at the discovering of her composition, efforts at demilitarizing and blaspheming her shall go down in history as being the most expansive, expensive and elaborate courses conceived by the most savage and restless men.
You are not merely a raindrop in the ocean. You are the ground beneath holding it, the clouds above it, and the rushing waters thereof.- SB
"Breathtaking and painfully beautiful"
"Raw and eloquent...I couldn't put it down."
"Out of nowhere, or maybe somewhere, this writer has painted the Black female experience with all the colors from the spectrum of emotion and perspective. This book should be celebrated forever."
"Barbee, though a voice to be reckoned with herself, writes with an echo of Angelou against a murmur of Gil Scot Heron."
"BARE is as much of a siren as it is a song and even more so an anthem of the Black Experience."
Look ‘Merica, I done told you for the millionth-man time that Black Lives Matter
Since the first day, when you took human beings as slaves
Do you need a hearing aid?
This land is getting older, peaks of the Rockies are much whiter
Shoulders hunched over, time for bifocals
so you can focus, see, my pain is real
America’s temperature is high…how do you feel?
A little orange? Your skin don’t look right.
Lay down my child, I fear you are ill.
A country built in blood will shoot itself in the Tar Heel
A country built by slaves will never be free
Ask China about our economy
Ask Russia about our polls
Ask the Federal Reserve about our gold
Robert E. Lee is on the Durham ground
But I learned London Bridge was
falling down as a kid
And that mf never did
Abolish racist statutes then erect new statues.
I am weary of symbolic protest
Know this… true movement bears actual improvement
To erase the imagery of slavery, you’ll have to erase me.
Wipe every name from every street
Even Martin Luther King
Cuz yal niggas sell dope on Martin Luther King!
except from Chicago and the Precedence for Violence
God taught me to sleep at night
